Debut 25 August 1984 Rhyl (Away)

Steve, the son of Stoke City's then manager Tony Waddington, was an apprentice at Stoke signing his first professional contract in June 1973 going on to make 52 league appearances, scoring five goals.  On leaving Stoke signed for Walsall in September 1978 for a fee of £40,000 where he enjoyed success (130 appearances, 13 goals) moving to Port Vale in August 1982 but only made single league appearance in the 1982-83 season after which he signed for Chesterfield in July 1983 (18 appearances, one goal).

He returned to play his part in the winning of the NPL Championship and gained winners' medals for the League Cup and the Presidents Cup.

Steve moved to Winsford United in 1987 and then Leek Town, Rocester and Nantwich Town. He had also spent time playing in South Africa with Cape Town City.

At the time he was playing for Goldenhill Wanderers William was given a trial by Macclesfield, when he gave a good performance and caused the opposition defence trouble to such an extent that he did not return to Goldenhill quickly establishing himself in the Macclesfield team.

He started the 1925-26 season  at outside right, but in November moved to left-back as an experiment which must have been successful as he filled that position, other than for a handful of matches, for the remainder of the season.

He made fewer appearances in his final season starting in the defence but by the end of the season had returned to outside-right.

In May 1925 he gained a winners' medal in the Cheshire Challenge Cup competition when Macclesfield were victorious against Manchester North End. In the same competition in 1926 he gained a runners'-up medal against Northwich Victoria.  He also reached the semi-final in the Cheshire Senior Cup in both 1925-26 and 1926-27.

He was capped as an England Amateur in May 1959.

From the Moss Rose he moved to Blackpool in October 1959 (257 appearances) who voluntarily sent a ’grant’ of £200 to Macclesfield. Whilst at Blackpool he made five international appearances for England and was ever-present for the club in the top-flight for two seasons. He retired in May 1967 taking up coaching, firstly with the Football Association as a regional coach, and later for the youth development section at Liverpool. Tony started playing again at Burnley in July 1970 when he replaced the injured Peter Mellor making 38 League appearances and finally retiring in 1972.

He became a coach with the England national youth side and led them to a European Championship in Italy. A move into league management came next at Plymouth Argyle in October 1972 overseeing their 1974-75 promotion as champions of the Third Division. After leaving Plymouth he managed  Vancouver Whitecaps and the Canadian team taking the national side to their one and only World Cup appearance in 1986. He stepped down as the Canadian manager after their World Cup appearance but returned for a brief period in 1990.

Since then he has written books on soccer skills and coaching and was inducted into the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame on 2001. In the 1980s he created his company World of Soccer and developed Byte Size Coaching which has been used by over 350 clubs across the World. In his youth Harry played for Dresden Church School and was a schoolboy international signing for Stoke as an amateur at the age of 15. He signed for Macclesfield in January 1927 as a professional initially sharing the right-back position with Rutledge, who was at that time the established holder of the position, however, by the end of March 1927 Harry had become the first choice right-back by which time he had demonstrated his ability as a strong, fearless and robust defender with a cool head.

In the 1927-28 season he only missed three matches through injury and was ever-present for the 1928-29 season when he scored five goals.  The 1929-30 season saw him score six goals, three of which were scored when he moved temporarily to the forward line, and he only missed one match. (16 appearances), but his appearances were limited by injury and he spent time on loan at Wrexham from March to June 2007 (three appearances).  Richard underwent a knee operation in 2007 but did not return to the senior side and was released by Port Vale.

Richard signed for Macclesfield Town in March 2008 when he brought much needed height and strength to the back line.

In the 2008-09 season, Richard lost his place at the end of a set of disastrous results in August, but was recalled to the side at the end of December after poor performances by the team as a whole, when he proved to be a solid and reliable central defender using his aerial ability well. An after match report by the referee’s assessor saw Richard pick up a three match ban in February 2009. After the ban, just as he was re-establishing himself, he was injured and rarely played afterwards.

Richard was released in the summer of 2009 when he was appointed player/first team coach at Hednesford Town although he left by mutual agreement in January 2010. Hailing from Macclesfield he first played for Macclesfield True Blues and then signed for Hallefield-Macclesfield during the 1899-1900 season. (Amateur side Hallefield had played their matches on the Moss Rose from the start of the 1897-98 season after Macclesfield FC could not fulfil their fixtures due to financial problems.)

It would appear that he did not feature in the Manchester League side for the re-formed Macclesfield FC team during the 1900-01 season but signed for Derby County in April 1901 where he made one senior appearance for them in the FA Cup competition during the 1902-03 season. He then signed for Brentford (May 1904), Portsmouth (May 1905) and New Brompton (May 1906).

(It is recorded that he then returned to Macclesfield in April 1907 but there is no record of him making any senior appearances.)

In October 1907 he signed for Chesterfield Town.

Joe returned to Macclesfield in the summer of 1908 going straight into the team in the forward line and scoring two goals on his debut, completing the 1908-09 season as joint second-top scorer with Tommy Nolan behind A Lawton. At this time he was described as a first class player, clever and stylist forward. When W Taylor suffered a broken cheekbone in February 1909 Warrington fell back to left-half and also deputised for Taylor again later in the season. He won a Manchester League Championship medal for the 1908-09 season.

He spent the 1909-10 season at Hyde before returning to Macclesfield again in October 1910 playing in the forward line and later at left-half, but was injured at the beginning of February 1911 only making one further appearance that season before signing for Leek United in April 1911 and then Congleton Town in December 1911.

Returned yet again to Macclesfield in September 1912 featuring in early season matches when different players were being tried out in the left-half position prior to Davies being given the role.  Also played in early season matches for the reserve team.  Moved to Hurst in October 1912 (four appearances) which appears to have been his last club.

Born: January 1882. Died: 11 January 1924.

A trainee at Sheffield Wednesday, Simon progressed to the professional ranks in May 1996 although he never made a senior appearance there, but went out on loan at Doncaster Rovers from February to March 1997 (two league appearances). On leaving Wednesday he moved into the Non-League scene signing for Ilkeston Town in July 1998 and then Nuneaton Borough in February 2000 (63 appearances).  He joined Lincoln City in July 2002 (88 appearances, four goals) and was virtually ever present as they reached the Play-off Final in his first full season in the Football League.

Early in the 2004-05 season he found himself out of favour, and came to Macclesfield Town on loan for two months in October 2004 where he provided cover for regular members of the squad who were out injured, usually playing on the right side of a three-man central defence where he proved to be a hard working player.

Shortly after returning to Lincoln City he moved to Kidderminster Harriers in December 2004 (23 appearances), before joining Scarborough in July 2005 (22 appearances, one goal) and later to York City although he did not make any senior appearances for them. Born in Manchester 24 June 1931, as a youth he played for Ardwick Lads Club and from 1950-52 he was a member of the Manchester City youth set-up earning his first professional contract with Manchester City in February 1952. He remained with City until 1953 but only made one senior appearance.  He then moved to Ashton United and Hyde United before signing for Macclesfield.

At Macclesfield his appearances were spread throughout the first half of the 1958-59 season and were mainly at inside-left although on occasions he was asked to play in the defence. He featured in the first five matches but was in competition with several players resulting in no preferred player filling the inside-left position.

His last appearance for Macclesfield came at Mossley on 3 January 1959 when it assumed he moved to Nantlle Vale. He then played for Pwllheli before becoming manager at Stalybridge Celtic then Hyde and later Runcorn.  He was then groundsman and assistant manager at Stockport County, manager there from 1982-85 and was then again groundsman.

Had a testimonial in 1990, Stockport County v Manchester City and was briefly assistant manager at Mossley in 1991.

FL    League 50(12)2   Cups 9(2)0

NC   League 37(1)0     Cups 8(0)0

Debut 7 August 2010 Stevenage (Away)

Sam started his career at Non-League Worcester City moving to Sheffield United in January 2006 where he became a regular in the Academy and Reserve sides signing his first professional contract in February 2007.  Spent time on loan at Mansfield Town in October 2008 (one league appearance) and then on loan at Hungarian Second Division club, Ferencvaros, Sheffield United’s sister club from January to December 2009 (17 appearances, two goals). He played his part in their success in winning their Division and a return to the top flight.  He returned the following season, playing for the first month and a half before a broken foot prematurely ended his time there.

An enthusiastic midfielder who can also play in the back four, Sam moved to Macclesfield Town in July 2010. Initially with limited opportunity for first team appearances, Sam spent time on loan at Altrincham from January to February 2011 (six appearances, one goal). On his return justified his regular inclusion in the starting line-up. His one goal was a stunning equalising volley in the 92nd minute of the home match against Lincoln City in March 2011.

A regular in the starting line-up for the 2011-12 season, Sam continued to play enthusiastically usually on the right of midfield, but his versatility ensure that he played equally as well when in a central midfield position or, as he did for the last few matches of the season, at right-back. He underwent a hernia operation in January but, amazingly, returned to action only four weeks later.

Sam had to work even harder at the beginning of the 2012-13 being one of the few players who had featured for the Silkmen in the previous season with newly appointed manager Steve King selecting his new signings. Early season appearances resulted in Sam being substituted, but by October Sam had won over manager King and from then onwards he was almost ever-present to the end of the season. Again his battling and consistent performances in midfield, whether playing with two, three or four players, added value to the team's overall achievements. During the season he reached the landmark of 100 appearances in all competitions for the Silkmen and made an appearance for the England C team. His work was recognised when he was voted both the Players' and the Supporters' Player of the Year.

On leaving Macclesfield signed for Football League One side Stevenage In July 2013 (13 appearances) moving to National League side Forest Green Rovers in May 2014 (76 appearances). Sam moved on again in July 2017 when he signed for National League side Wrexham (41 appearances, one goal). His contract with Wrexham was cancelled by mutual consent in May 2018 as Sam had found it difficult travelling to Wrexham from Sheffield for training. As he had only signed a new contract earlier in 2018 he handed back his signing on fee. In July 2018 signed for Chesterfield  who had been relegated to the Vanarama National League at the end of the 2017-18 season. Signed for Buxton in the summer of 2020 but was released at the end of the 2020-21 season and lost no time in finding a new club when he signed for Stalybridge Celtic in May 2021 moving to NPL-Division 1 East side Worksop Town in the summer of 2022 with his contract extended for the 2023-24 season. Honoured, along with Hamza Bencherif, when selected in the NPL - Division One East Team of the Season for the 2022-23 season..

Away from football - since dropping out of the professional game has been involved in a building business.

Born: 26 February 1989.

Weir-Daley Spencer

2006-07 Forward

FL   League 5(2)2     Cups 1(0)0

Debut 9 September 2006 Sub Barnet (Home)

A member of the Academy at Nottingham Forest Spencer signed his first professional contract in January 2014 going onto make seven league appearances, scoring one goal for Forest.

Joined Macclesfield Town at the end of August 2006 for a four-month loan period in order to gain first-team experience. Spencer certainly provided pace and was always willing to move into space but, on the face of it, he appeared to find it difficult to settle with the Silkmen, possibly because the side were desperately trying to find form at the time of his loan, and returned early to Nottingham.

He then spent time on loan at Lincoln City From January to March 2007 (11 appearances, five goals) and Bradford City from March to April 2007 (five appearances, one goal). On leaving Forest he signed for Notts County in July 2007 (40 appearances three goals) leaving them in January 2009. He was then a free agent until he signed for Ilkeston Town in September 2009 after which he played for a series of clubs: Boston United from October 2009 (79 appearances, 35 goals), AFC Telford United from August 2011 (two appearances), Buxton on dual registration (three appearances, four goals), re-signed for Boston United in January 2012 (87 appearances, 31 goals), Corby Town in July 2014 (47 appearances, 27 goals), spending time on loan at Kettering Town from February to June 2016, Hednesford Town in December 2016, returned to Corby Town at the beginning of March 2017, Redditch United in the summer of 2017, Halesowen Town in December 2017,  Rushden & Diamonds in March 2018 (10 appearances, two goals),  Barwell in August 2018 and Peterborough Sports in October 2018 (four appearances, two goals) where he suffered an injury keeping him out of contention with the PFA meeting his medical bills.  Recuperated at Gresley, initially as part of the management team and then as a player, returned to Peterborough Sports for the start of the 2019-20 season moving to Shepshed Dynamo in March 2020 on a dual registration and in the summer of 2020 signed for Spalding United also on dual registration. Although he appeared on the scoresheet for Spalding United in two pre-season friendlies decided to leave the club in August 2021. Started the 2021-22 season at United Counties League - Premier Division North side Melton Town (five appearances) and ended the season with Pinchbeck United (19 appearances, six goals) extending his stay with Pinchbeck United for the 2022-23 season. However, moved to Anstey Nomads in March 2023 (nine appearances, three goals) helping them to win the United Counties Football League - Premier Division North. Remained with them for the 2023-24 season in the higher League, NPL - Division 1 Midlands.

Continues (2021) to appear at international level for Montserrat.

Born: Leicester, 5 September 1985.

2001-02 to 2004-05 Defender

FL     League 108(6)5     Cups 14(0)0

Debut 22 March 2002 Hartlepool (Away)

A former Republic of Ireland Youth international and Barnsley trainee, Michael moved to Macclesfield progressing through the youth and reserve teams signing his first professional contract in August 2001.  After breaking into the senior side towards the end of the 2001-02 season, he became a regular in the starting line-up as a central defender, although there were times when he was asked to play in the centre of the midfield where he never really looked comfortable. His first senior goal came in spectacular style, in the 3–1 win at Hull City in September 2002 with a 40-yard strike which thundered into the back of the net. Michael always made good use of his physical presence, was not afraid to make timely tackles and was renowned for his long clearances to avert danger.

In August 2005 Michael moved to Accrington Stanley (84 appearances, eight  goals) where he was a member of their Conference championship side. He moved to Northwich Victoria in  July 2007 (59 appearances, seven goals) whilst there spending time on loan at Altrincham from February to June 2009 (13 appearances, two goals) signing a permanent contract with Altrincham in July 2009 (29 appearances, one goal)  leaving in January 2011 when he retired.

Has been a logistics manager and customer service manager in the car accident and repair industry.  In 2017 was appointed project manager at Bailey Streetscene Ltd based at Adlington, Cheshire who supplied new dugouts and barriers/stanchions in the Star Lane End for the former MTFC.

As a schoolboy played for Marston Saints under 8s before joining Championship side Reading where he featured in their Under 12s and under 14s sides. He then moved to the youth section at Oxford United in 2010 but as he developed he was loaned out to gain match experience at Daventry Town (December 2014 to April 2015), North Leigh (August 2015 to September 2015 and October 2015) and Banbury United (December 2015 to April 2016). Signed his first professional contract at Oxford United in 2016 but only made one senior appearance on 17 August 2016 against Fleetwood Town. Following a loan at Bath City from December 2016 to April 2017 he signed permanently for them for the 2017-18 season but found himself out on loan again on this occasion at Oxford City (October 2017 to November 2017). On his return to Bath City his performances earned him a place in the Vanarama League South Team of the Year for the 2017-18 season after just missing out on the play-offs.

Signed a two-year deal with Macclesfield Town in June 2018 moving up two leagues. Capable of playing in both the left and right back positions, most of his appearances came at right back. Very much a squad man competing against more experienced players throughout the season. He was used sparingly until the middle of October 2018 when he enjoyed an extended run until the beginning of March 2019. Miles then dropped to the bench returning for four matches in April.

Started the 2019-20 season as a centre back, later moving to his more accustomed position of right-back, featuring regularly until 11 January 2020 when he sustained an injury. His one goal for the club came in the 1-1 draw at Walsall in December 2019.  Having left Macclesfield Town in the last week in January 2020 signed a contract in February 2020 until the end of the 2021-22 season with Colchester United remaining with them for the 2021-22 season. Having been released by Colchester United at the end of the 2021-22 season, signed for EFL2 side Harrogate Town, going on loan to Altrincham in January 2023 until the end of the 2022-23 season. In the summer of 2023 signed a three-year deal with Scottish Premiership side Livingston.

In September 2017 was appointed caretaker manager for Oldham Athletic and appointed as manager in October 2017. With Oldham relegated to Sky Bet League 2, Richie was released at the end of the 2017-18 season. Subsequently Richie was appointed manager at Swindon Town in the middle of November 2018. Whilst at Stockport he spent six weeks on loan with Macclesfield Town when he made a huge impression on the right wing with his pace, which caused many problems for the opposition defence.

On leaving County moved to Sunderland in November 2004 for a fee of £15000 (21 appearances, one goal) where he went out on loan to Leicester City on two occasions, from March 2006 (10 appearances, one goal) and October 2006 (seven appearances). Was released by Sunderland in May 2007 and after a short spell with Toronto FC, signed for Blackpool in August 2007 (21 appearances), moving to Yeovil Town in September 2008 (113 appearances, six goals) then Carlisle United in July 2011 (33 appearances), Scunthorpe United in July 2013 (four appearances), FC United of Manchester (2014) and in December 2014 moved to Farsley Athletic to be nearer home.

Next available information sees him signing for Ossett Albion in September 2017 as player/First Team Coach. Ossett Albion run Unita FC & Academy where Andy undertakes some coaching and is also involved with 3v3SoccerUK. ( His first coaching experience came in 2014 at Sheffield Wednesday when he was Academy Lead Coach for the Under 11s.) Appointed Manager of Ossett Albion in December 2017 and the Unita FC & Academy. Appointed manager of Ossett United from the start of the 2018-19 season, the new Evo-Stik League North Club following the merger of Ossett Town and Ossett Albion, although he was still registered as a player, but by his own admission is concentrating on his managerial duties for the 2018-19 season. Won the County Cup and reached the play-offs in his first season as manager of the newly constituted Ossett United but after a difficult close season and with the team lying in 18th position Andy resigned as manager in November 2019. Appointed the first-ever manager of the newly formed AFC Bury in July 2020 having been selected from 750 applicants signing an extension to his contract to the end of the 2022-23 season. Led his team to their first ever title when they became champions of the North West Counties League Division One North in the 2021-22 season and Andy was given the honour of the Division's Manager of the Year Award. His managerial contract with Bury AFC was extended to the end of the 2023-24 season in the summer of 2022. Appointed  manager of the Phoenix club Bury FC from the start of the 2023-24 season. After only two wins from the first eight matches of the 2023-24 season Andy was relieved of his duties as manager. Debut 2 February 2002 Sub Exeter City (Home)

Danny was the first local boy to progress through the ranks since the Silkmen were promoted to the Football League, having been signed from Wilmslow Albion having spent time on schoolboy forms at Manchester United. He was first noticed whilst playing for the Macclesfield District Youth team and went on to play for Cheshire County Youth. So that he could play for the Macclesfield Town Youth team he initially signed non-contract forms and later featured regularly in the Reserve side, and was promoted to the senior side in the second half of the 2001-02 season.

Coming on from the substitutes’ bench, Danny scored on his Football League debut after only 25 minutes, which was a taster to his future achievements and the start of a regular place in the starting line-up, notching up the fourth highest number of appearances in all competitions of all players since Macclesfield’s elevation to the Football League.  Danny was a versatile player who was capable of filling any of the midfield positions, with his best performances coming as an attacking central midfielder where he used his excellent first touch, pace and passing ability to the full, all of which led to goal scoring opportunities.

His achievements have included an extra time hat-trick, scored in 14 minutes, in the 4–1 victory against Barnsley in the Worthington Cup in September 2002, joint top-scorer in the 2002-03 season, and Player of the Year in 2006 recognising his consistent level of performance throughout his time at the Moss Rose.

In the summer of 2006 Danny took the opportunity of moving up a League, when he signed for Port Vale where he remained until the summer of 2008 when he made the move to Oldham Athletic. More recently he has played for Chesterfield but returned to Macclesfield in the summer of 2013.

Danny was almost ever-present in the 2013-14 season when he again demonstrated his ability as an attacking central midfielder, although there were times towards the end of the season when he featured on the wing. One of his best moments of the season came in the home win against Barnet in March 2014 when he scored a stunning goal from 40 yards.

Re-signed for Macclesfield in the summer of 2014, Danny featured in the first three matches of the season, but having suffered a back injury was out of contention until the first match at the beginning of November after which he was virtually ever-present to the end of the season. He played in his usual central midfield position although towards the end of the season featured on the left side of midfield, and with six goals to his credit was the third highest scorer for the season.

During the 2015-16 season Danny continued to serve Macclesfield well as an attacking central midfielder although he was asked to fill the left wing position from time to time. Acted as team captain in the absence of Paul Turnbull, was the second highest season scorer with eight goals and made more appearances than any other player. During the season Danny achieved the landmark of 300 appearances in all competitions for Macclesfield Town, made his 600th career appearance and stood in 15th position in the all-time number of appearances for Macclesfield.

Even at 36 years of age Danny showed no sign of slowing down and his performances were as professional as ever during the 2016-17 season, again as an attacking midfielder although there were times when he was used on the left wing. He was again the second highest scorer with 11 goals and played in more matches (55) than other player.

The 2017-18 season saw Danny defying the odds again as a speedy attacking central midfielder featuring in the majority of matches and scoring nine goals, four of which were penalties. Acted as captain in early season matches when Jared Hodgkiss was injured, Danny also took on the responsibility for set pieces throughout the season. His contribution added to the team's overall performance in becoming champions of the Vanarama National League. At the end of the 2017-18 season Danny ranked fifth in the Macclesfield Town FC all-time appearances and 16th in the all-time goalscorers. In his career he had notched up 736 appearances (all clubs and all competitions) and scored 123 goals. Gained the accolade of Player of the Year sponsored by Mark Harrod, Products for Sport, in the 2017-18 National Game Awards and was also named in the Vanarama National Team of the Year.

During the 2018-19 season Danny was appointed to different managerial roles as well as remaining as a registered player.  In June 2018 he became joint assistant manager, along with former Silkman Neil Howarth, to newly appointed manager Mark Yates. On the dismissal of Yates on 6 October 2019, Danny and Neil Howarth were appointed joint caretaker managers and following the dismissal of Howarth, Danny was sole caretaker manager for two matches (both of which he won).  On the appointment of Sol Campbell as manager at the beginning of December 2018 Danny returned to the role of assistant manager. On the playing side he returned to his attacking midfield role appearing in the starting line-up for the first two months of the season. He was then sidelined with a knee ligament injury and having recovered he returned for five matches from the middle of November but then suffered an acute back problem which kept him out of contention for some time leaving him to concentrate on his managerial duties.  Returned in the middle of March but only as a bit part player for seven matches, six of which were from the substitutes'' bench. Nevertheless Danny continued to chalk up personal milestones - on 15 December 2018 in the home match against Crawley Town he made his 450th appearance (all competitions) for Macclesfield,  at the end of the season he had made 762 career appearances (all clubs, all competitions) scoring 127 goals, was fourth in the table for Macclesfield all-time appearances (457), 16th in the table for Macclesfield all-time goal scorers (75) and had made the second highest number of appearances in the Football League for Macclesfield. This was also Danny's Testimonial Season which included a Gala Dinner, Race Night and a Celebrity Football Match.

At the age of 38 on 9 July 2019 Danny announced his retirement from playing football by way of an open letter to the supporters of the Silkmen but confirmed that he would remain a member of the backroom staff. Came out of retirement on 15 September 2020 siging a one-year playing contract while at the same time continuing to assist manager Tim Flowers. Unfortunately his contract became null and void the following day when a Winding-up Order was implemented on Macclesfield Town FC.

Following the purchase of the assets of the former club, on 13 October 2020 it was announced that Danny Whitaker had been appointed the first manager of the newly constituted Macclesfield FC. In March 2021 it was announced that Danny at the age of 40 was coming out of retirement signing the first players' contract for the phoenix club to become player/manager. Led his team to their first ever title when they became champions of the North West Counties Premier Division for the 2021-22 inaugural season.

Dismissed as manager at the end of October 2022 with the team standing at the head of the league table with the club giving the reason for his dismissal as recent home league defeats and defeats in the FA Cup and FA Trophy matches. The club statement indictaed that Danny would be given a prestigious appointment in the club's Academy at no loss of income. In January 2023 the club announced that Danny had been appointed Head of Player Development in the Macclesfield FC Academy. Macclesfield FC Under 21 side can play over-aged players with Danny pulling his boots on again to represent this side in the early matches of the 2023-24 season.

Damien Whitehead

1999-00 to 2001-02 Forward

FL   League 20(38)14      Cups 1(5)0

Debut 14 August 1999 Sub Darlington (Away)

Prior to joining Macclesfield in the summer of 1999, Damien was at Warrington Town where he scored 58 goals in 43 starts in all competitions.  Damien was certainly a favourite with many of the supporters, as he always provided good entertainment value with his pace in the box and his eye for goal, scoring with a mixture of headers and close-range strikes.  There were many times when his technical ability let him down which meant that he was often omitted from the starting line-up, and he gradually lost favour, spending much of his last season out on loan assisting League of Ireland First Division side Drogheda United to win promotion, scoring six goals in ten matches. Whilst at Macclesfield Damien gained a winners' medal in the Cheshire Senior Cup in 2000.

Damien moved to Leigh RMI in the summer of 2002 (10 appearances) after which he played for Northwich Victoria (four appearances) and Leigh RMI for a second time (nine appearances), He then returned to play in Ireland for several clubs: Finn Harps (2003 - 24 appearances, 16 goals), Omagh Town (2004 - 12 appearances, four goals), Institute (2005 - 14 appearances, six goals), Newry City (2005 to 2006 - 22 appearances, eight goals) and Coleraine (2006-2008 - 34 appearances, 14 goals).

Since retiring from playing is said to have held a coaching role in the USA.

Born: St Helens, 24 April 1979.

Started his career in the youth team at Stockport County in 2008, signing his first professional contract with them in 2011 going on to make 59 league appearances and scoring six goals.  He was then signed by West Ham United for an undisclosed fee in July 2013 but only made one senior appearance in January 2014 in the FA Cup tie against Nottingham Forest. His contract was terminated in January 2015 after which he signed a short-term contract with Accrington Stanley in the middle of March 2015 (two league appearances).

Signed permanently for Macclesfield Town in the summer of 2015 going straight into the team for the opening match of the season proving from the start to be a dependable and capable central midfielder. Missed several matches due to injury but on his return slotted back into his role with ease.

During the January 2016 transfer window Danny signed for Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed fee but was loaned back to Macclesfield Town to the end of the season. Following his return to Wigan, Danny signed a season-long loan deal with Cheltenham Town for the 2016-17 season, however, having only made 10 appearances in all competitions including three from the substitutes' bench, his loan was cancelled by mutual agreement at the beginning of January 2017 when Danny returned to his parent club Wigan Athletic.

Returned to Macclesfield on 20 January 2017 on loan until the end of the 2016-17 season. Featured in two matches immediately after his return but was then out of action following a hernia operation until early April and rarely played the full 90 minutes during his 10 appearances.

Having been unable to break into the senior squad at Wigan Athletic his contract was cancelled by mutual consent in September 2017 when he re-signed for Macclesfield Town on a permanent deal. Made his first appearance for the Silkmen in the 2017-18 season from the substitutes' bench in the home match against Maidstone United on 16 September after which he was virtually ever-present to the end of the season. An integral member of the team in the centre of midfield he also scored six goals, one of the most important at Woking when the ball had stuck in the mud in front of goal, Danny raced in to slot home to give the Silkmen a 3-2 victory and sustain the momentum to become champions.  His overall contribution helped the team become champions of the Vanarama National League for the 2017-18 season.

Offered terms with Macclesfield Town for the 2018-19 season, Danny elected to sign for Salford City. Returned to Macclesfield Town in January 2020 on loan until the end of the 2019-20 season. Was ever-present in the centre of midfield other for the match against his parent club, but was unfortunate to join a side in a poor run of form. Returned to his parent club in June 2020.

Having left Salford City signed a two-year contract with Port Vale in the summer of 2020 remaining under contract for the 2021-22 season going out on a one-month loan to Altrincham in October 2021 which must have been extended as he was recalled by Port Vale on 24 December 2021 having made 10 appearances for Altrincham. Subsequently signed for AFC Fylde until the end of the 2022-23 season remaining with them for the 2023-24 season following the club triggering a one-year contract option.

Made a number of appearances in the 1900-01 season but lost his place for the following season. He also played for Bollington Cross FC during the 1900-01 season when they won the Macclesfield and District Charity Cup and it is possible that he was also playing for Bollington Cross FC during the 1901-02 season after he 'lost' his place at Macclefield FC. Signed for Macclesfield Town on a free transfer just before the start of the Silkmen’s first season in the Football League. A tricky out and out winger, Stuart played on the left, but would often change to the right during matches to outwit the opposition, running at defenders and often beating them to be the supplier for many of Macclesfield’s goals.  He was a member of the team which completed the 1997-98 season as runners-up in the Nationwide League Division 3 gaining promotion to Division 2.  Stuart also gained a winners' medal in  the Cheshire Senior Cup in 1998. In his second season, he was troubled by a groin injury for which he underwent surgery but found it difficult to regain form.

Debut 25 August 2003 Bristol Rovers (Away)

Tommy commenced his career at Southampton as a trainee gaining his first professional contract in May 1990. He enjoyed Premiership appearances there (75 appearances, three goals) and spent time on loan at Wigan Athletic (six appearances). A £30,000 move took him to Grimsby Town in July 1996 (89 appearances, eight goals), he then signed for Port Vale in March 1999 (82 appearances, eight goals), joining Hartlepool United in July 2001 (56 appearances, five goals) where he played an important part in their promotion from the former Third Division.

A free transfer in August 2003 brought Tommy to Macclesfield Town when he became a regular in the starting line-up as a defensive midfielder who could hold the ball up well, with his style of play gaining many admirers. Tommy was appointed captain at the beginning of the 2004-05 season and was a regular in the side until the middle of December, after which younger players were preferred with his contract terminated by mutual consent in January 2005.

Initially moved to Port Vale on non-contract terms in January 2005 (six appearances) and played on his 92nd Football League ground at Edgeley Park three games before signing for Salisbury City in February 2005 (46 appearances, two goals). He later became Head Coach and then in July 2009 he was appointed manager. But when the team went into administration he left and was appointed assistant manager at Southend United in July 2010, however, only spent a short time there leaving in December 2010.  Appointed manager at Hemel Hempstead Town for the 2011-12 season and then took charge at Eastbourne Borough in the summer of 2012. Left Eastbourne Borough at his own behest in April 2017 on the basis that he believed that it was the right time for a fresh face to take over the managerial responsibilities. Appointed Head of Recruitment at Coventry City in April 2017 moving to a similar role at Bristol Rovers in May 2018.

In November 2020 on the departure of manager Ben Garner, Tommy was appointed caretaker manager until the appointment of Paul Tisdale overseeing a single match, the 4-3 victory over Chelsea Under 21s in the English Football League Trophy. Assisted Tisdale in his initial transition into the role of manager after which Tommy was appointed Director of Football and joined the Board of Bristol Rovers. In June 2021 Bristol Rovers announced that they had removed the Director of Football role although Tommy would remain on the Board and that he would be in charge of creating a loan department which will be tasked with establishing relationships with other clubs. In addition, he will be responsible for mirroring the first-team philosophy across the Academy structure as laid down by the first-team manager.

Having left BRistol Rovers at the beginning of December 2021 was appointed manager of National League side KIng's Lynn Town days later. In the summer of 2022 signed an extension to his contract to the summer of 2024 with an option to extend for a further year but resigned on 2 April 2023 so that he could be appointed manager of National League side Aldershot Town. In November 2023 signed an extension to his contract, the length of which was not reported.

Debut 13 November 2006 Walsall (Home) FA Cup R1

Progressing through the ranks at Blackpool, Simon signed his first professional contract in May 2004, making an excellent impression in his first season as a speedy winger making 31 appearances, scoring three goals.

Simon joined Macclesfield Town on loan at the end of October 2006, immediately bringing good fortune in the two FA Cup matches against Walsall, and provided much needed pace down the right-wing. Unfortunately he was injured in the infamous match against Stockport in November 2006 but returned, again on loan, during the January 2007 transfer window, however, Simon only made a few appearances, mostly from the substitutes’ bench.   Simon returned again to the Moss Rose for a third loan spell at the beginning of the 2007-08 season, again making most of his appearances from the substitutes’ bench but still displayed a good turn of pace and the ability to make pin-point crosses into the box.

Although Macclesfield offered Simon a contract he opted to return to Blackpool at the end of December 2007. Since then he has played for Dunfermline Athletic from July 2008 (eight appearances) being released at the end of the 2008-09 season after which he was a free agent until signing for Barrow in January 2010 (28 appearances, four goals), including appearing in their FA Trophy Final victory against Stevenage Borough. In June 2013 Simon was appointed coach for the U10s team at Blackpool and signed for Chorley after a successful trial for the 2013-14 season. Moved to Salford City in the summer of 2014 (four appearances) but signed for Bamber Bridge in November 2014 where he became first team coach and then in December 2016 was appointed Assistant Manager but also continued to feature as a player. In addition, at that time Simon was the Youth Development Lead Stage Coach at Football League Club Fleetwood Town, an appointment which he held since August 2016. Following Bamber Bridge gaining promotion via the play-offs to the NPL Premier Division at the end of the 2017-18 season, Simon announced that he was stepping down from the role of assistant manager to concentrate on his new coaching role with the Under 18s at Fleetwood Town. Following the departure of manager Joey Barton, Simon was appointed interim Head Coach in early January 2021 assisted by Steve Macauley, another former Silkman, until the appointment of Simon Grayson at the end of January 2021. Left Fleetwood Town in the summer of 2022 to join the first team coaching staff at Salford City. Following the dismissal of Salford City's Head Coach, Neil Wood, on Boxing Day 2023, Simon was placed in temporary charge until the appointment of new Head Coach, Karl Robinson, on 5 January 2024.

Williams_Anthony

Anthony is a former trainee at Blackburn Rovers where he was awarded his first professional contract at the age of 19 in July 1996, although he never made any first team appearances for them nor for Queens Park Rangers where he spent a month on loan. He represented Wales, firstly at youth level and then at Under-21 level.

Anthony, or “Taffy” as he became known at Macclesfield Town, had two loan spells, the first for a month in January 1999 when he made his Football League debut, and the second for some two months commencing January 2000.  At the time of his second loan, the club needed special dispensation from the League to sign him as they were under a transfer embargo with his move only granted because the regular ‘keeper, Lee Martin, was out injured. Tony proved to be a capable ‘keeper who commanded his area well, took up good positions and inspired confidence in the defence. Although clean sheets were few and far between, it was no reflection on Anthony but due to the team’s indifferent form at that time.

Whilst at Blackburn in addition to his time on loan at Macclesfield Town, he also had loan spells at Bristol Rovers from March to May 1999 (nine appearances) and Gillingham from August to October 1999 (two appearances).  On leaving Blackburn signed for Hartlepool United in July 2000 (131 appearances) although he spent time on loan at Swansea City from November to December 2003 (no appearances) and Stockport County from January to May 2004 (15 appearances). On leaving Hartlepool signed for Grimsby Town in July 2004 (46 appearances) moving to Carlisle United in July 2005 (11 appearances) where he spent time on loan at Bury from January to February 2006 (three appearances) and initially at Wrexham from March 2007, signing a permanent deal  for the Welsh club in the summer of 2007 (36 appearances). He subsequently signed for Neath in July 2009 retiring from playing at the end of the 2009-10 season.

Having been goalkeeping coach at Bury, re-joined manager Richie Barker (former Silkman and manager at Bury) at Crawley Town in 2012 as his assistant manager, however, when Richie Barker was dismissed he also lost his position at Crawley.  Was appointed goalkeeping coach and assistant manager at Portsmouth in December 2013 where Richie Barker had been appointed manager but, yet again, when Barker lost his job in March 2014 Williams was also dismissed.

In 2015 he undertook various roles - Football Academy Co-ordinator for Bridgend College, Opposition Scout for MK Dons, Player Recruitment Scout (17 to 21 age group) at Stoke City and for the FA Wales UEFA C Licence Coach Education Tutor.

Born: Bridgend, 20 September 1977.

How he came to sign for Macclesfield  in March 1938 is unknown with his six league appearances spread over the final matches of the season.

In the Football Association of Wales 1991 publication 'Wales A-Z', Williams is described as a diminutive yet mercurial winger....whose busy, non-stop approach and delicate footwork made him a popular player with the crowds.

Also made one international appearance representing Wales.

After retiring he became a referee in the Welsh League and lived in Rhyl until emigrating to Canada with his family in the late 1950's.

He certainly maintained his goal scoring ability at Macclesfield, scoring on his debut in the 2-2 draw which he followed up in the next match at Tonge where he scored all three goals in the 3-0 win. He was regularly on the score sheet during the 1904-05 season and in the opening 11 matches of the 1905-06 season he scored 10 goals, including a hat-trick in the 5-5 draw at Newton Heath.

At the age of 21 he moved to Manchester United in the middle of November 1905.

He was the holder of Cheshire League Championship medals for both the 1931-32 and 1932-33 seasons, a winners' medal for the Challenge Cup competition in 1931-32 and a winners' medal for the Cheshire Senior Cup in 1934-35.

Having been released by Bradford, Steve signed for Macclesfield Town  in the summer of 2013. Whilst at Crewe spent time on loan at Altrincham from October 2005 to May 2006 (five appearances, one goal). On leaving Crewe he signed for Barrow in July 2006 (43 appearances, 12 goals) moving to Witton Albion (November 2007 to January 2008, 10 appearances, four goals) then Droylsden in January 2008 (one appearance), Fleetwood Town (five appearances), Skelmersdale United, FC United of Manchester in February 2008 (27 appearances, 25 goals) for whom he was top-scorer in the 2008-09 although his tally would have been much higher but for a knee injury in January which kept on the side-lined for the remainder of the season.

Kyle signed for Macclesfield Town in July 2009. Having made his debut, a series of niggling injuries kept Kyle out of contention for several weeks. Having recovered he was regularly included in the match-day squad but always as an unused substitute. He spent time on loan at his former club, FC United of Manchester (seven appearances, five goals), where he scored a hat-trick but was recalled following the death of manager Keith Alexander so that the squad could all be together.  However, he still could not break into the side on a regular basis and was released in the summer of 2010.

Started his career with the Bristol City Academy at the age of eight but was released at the age of 16. He then played for Filton College and was later given a second chance at Bristol City where he featured for their youth team and was also involved with the reserve team, but despite appearing regularly on the score sheet was released by City for a second time.

Whilst at Bristol City spent time on loan at Gloucester City (2011 - 13 league appearances, one goal) and Cinderford Town (2012). Signed for  Yate Town in 2012, Bath City (2014 - seven appearances, two goals), Gloucester City for a second time (2014 - seven appearances, one goal), and Paulton Rovers (2014-2015 - 41 appearances, 15 goals).  He then made the move to Conference South side Weston-super-Mare in July 2015 (39 appearances, 23 goals) where he was named as manager’s Player of the Year.  Graham Potter, former Macclesfield Town player, as manager of Ostersunds FK then offered a short term contract but Scott elected to sign for Eastleigh in July 2016 as he wanted the security of regular employment (37 appearances, six goals).

Signed by Macclesfield Town in the summer of 2017. He was used regularly in the first half of the season notching up 10 goals by the turn of the year including a hat-trick in the home match against Wrexham, with his four goals in September earning him the Vanarama National League Player of the Month Award. From February to the end of the season he only made the occasional appearance, loanee Nathan Blissett and Tyrone Marsh being the preferred options, nevertheless he still managed to score a further four goals including two in the final match of the season when he was a late introduction from the substitutes' bench. As season top scorer for the Silkmen with 14 goals, his contribution went a long way to helping the team become champions of the Vanarama National League for the 2017-18 season.

In the 2018-19 season Scott enjoyed a run of 13 consecutive matches from the middle of December during which he scored five goals but otherwise he rarely completed the full 90 minutes either being substituted or introduced from the substitutes' bench.  Nevertheless he was Macclesfield's top-scorer for the second consecutive season with 11 goals.

Although there was a year to run on his contract, left Macclesfield Town by mutual consent in July 2019 signing for Oldham Athletic moving to Notts County in February 2020 on loan until the end of the 2019-20 season. Released by Oldham Athletic at the end of the 2019-20 season going on to sign a short term contract with Notts County on 7 July 2020 moving to Dagenham and Redbridge on a permanent basis on 23 October 2020 extending his contract in the summer of 2021 for the 2021-22 season. Joined Aldershot Town towards the end of January 2022 on an initial one-month loan. Having been released by Dagenham & Redbridge in the summer of 2022 dropped down a level when he signed for National South side Bath City where he was their Player of the Month in February 2023. Scott continues to impress when he was awarded the August 2023 Player of the Month award for the National League South.

Steve Wilson

2000-01 to 2004-05 Goalkeeper

FL   League 132(2)0     Cups 20(0)0

Debut 21 April 2001 Southend United (Home)

Before moving to Macclesfield Steve had spent almost 10 years at Hull City  where he was initially a trainee signing his first professional contract in July 1992 going on to make 181 league appearances.

Towards the end of his time at Hull, opportunities were limited due to the introduction of younger ‘keepers, and he signed for Macclesfield Town in the summer of 2001 having spent a short time on loan the previous season. Steve soon took over from Lee Martin becoming a regular in the starting line-up until loanee Boaz Myhill replaced him at the start of the 2003-04 season. However, at the end of Boaz’s loan spell, Steve regained his place which he retained until his final season with the club, 2004-05, when he had to compete with Alan Fettis.

Like many goalkeepers, Steve was prone to the occasional slip-up, but overall commanded his area well, along the way improved his handling of high crosses, but it was as a shot stopper that he will be best remembered often making spectacular saves to keep the team in the match.  However, it was saving penalties, which was his forte. In the FA Cup replay at Forest Green Rovers he not only saved a spot kick in extra time, but helped the team to victory in what was then a new record for the number penalties required to settle a FA Cup tie. His penalty save in April 2003 at Torquay turned what would have been a defeat into a draw, and in December 2003 in the second round of the FA Cup against Cambridge United, he saved two penalties to earn Macclesfield a replay and then went on to play his part in the replay penalty shoot-out which saw Macclesfield win 4–2.  For his hard work Steve was voted Player of the Year for the 2002-03 season.

When Alan Fettis became the Silkmen’s first choice ‘keeper, Steve moved to Tranmere Rovers in July 2005 (12 appearances) and in 2006 signed for Worksop Town (eight appearances). Since then he played for Mossley (2006-2007 - 13 appearances), Hall Road Rangers (2007-2008), North Ferriby United (2008-2012 - 132) appearances, where he also had a brief stint as goalkeeping coach, and Scarborough Athletic (2012 - one appearance).

Born: Hull, 24 April 1974.

2012-13 and 2014-14 Defender/Midfielder

NC     League 49(18)0     Cups 3(6)1

Debut 10 August 2012 Hereford United (Away)

Peter started his career in the Academy at Scunthorpe signing his first professional contract in July 2007 and made his senior debut at the age of 16 but only went on to make four league appearances in total. He originally played as a goalkeeper but started playing on the left wing at the age of 14. However, unable to find a regular berth in the senior side he was sent out on loan on four occasions:  Northwich Victoria from October 2008 to January 2009 (nine league appearances, one goal), Barrow from February to March 2009 (three appearances), Gateshead from October to December 2009 (six appearances, one goal) and a second time to Gateshead from December 2009 to February 2010 (18 appearances, three goals) . He was released at the end of the 2009-10 season when he had rejected a contract with Gateshead in favour of a move to Stevenage

(28 appearances, three goals), helping the side earn promotion to League One in the 2010-11 season. (At the start of the 2011-12 season he was substitute 'keeper for Stevenage after Chris Day dislocated a finger in pre-season and became their second choice 'keeper for a time.)  In his second season, he was loaned out to Cambridge United from August to December 2011 (13 appearances, one goal) and Grimsby Town from March to May 2012 (10 appearances).

Having been released by Stevenage signed for Macclesfield Town in July 2013. Whether playing at left-back or left midfield, in the starting line-up or introduced from the substitutes' bench, it made no difference to Peter's consistent hardworking performances which he maintained throughout the season. An intelligent player who used the ball well, however, Peter's most notable performance came when he took over in goal during the home match against Luton Town in February 2013 after goalkeeper Rhys Taylor had been dismissed. He showed that he had not forgotten the goalkeeping skills learnt in his early football days.

For the 2013-14 season Peter continued to play with enthusiasm and a terrific work rate on the left wing, only missing the odd match in November with ankle ligament damage and a handful of matches in March after being injured in the match at Southport. In the 4-0 home win against Swindon Town in the first round of the FA Cup, Peter's work rate played dividends when he chased down a tame header back to the 'keeper by a Swindon defender, lobbing the 'keeper to score his first and only goal for Macclesfield, celebrating with glee in front of the Moss Lane stand packed with supporters.

Peter signed for Chester in July 2014 (12 appearances, one goal) spending time on loan at King's Lynn Town in 2015

(12 appearances, two goals), moving to Cleethorpes Town in July 2015. Later signed for Grimsby Borough with whom he won the 2018-19 title making 31 League appearances scoring four goals. Left Grimsby Borough in the summer of 2019 after which he signed for Barton Town returning to Grimsby Borough in January 2020. Signed for Nunsthorpe Tavern (Lincolnshire Football League - Premier Division) in November 2020 as a defender, Peter admitting that he had moved to the back-line as he was now slower having put on weight due to his office job which is a transport planner for a haulage company in Grimsby. Left Nunsthorpe Tavern in the summer of 2022 when he switched to Lincolnshire Football League - Premier Division side Grimsby United. In September  2023 he signed for NCEFL - Division 1 side Brigg Town. Appointed assistant manager at NCEFL - Premier side Barton Town in November 2023 where he was also registered as a player.

A local player who was born in Macclesfield in 1899.  He started playing football whilst serving in the forces where he spent three years. After demobilisation he signed for Leek Alexandra in the North Staffordshire League where he enjoyed success when the club won three cup competitions and were runners-up in the league.

Frank signed for Macclesfield in the summer of 1922.  Described as a speedy and skilful winger who could centre the ball well and was an excellent taker of corners, he went straight into the side and was ever-present until an injury in the home match against Runcorn at the beginning of April saw him spending time in hospital and missing the final month of the season.

At the beginning of the 1923-24 season he made a few appearances, but then Ben Boardman took his place and Frank found himself in the reserve team. He only made eight senior appearances but in one he scored four goals in the 8-0 home win against Nantwich on 28 April 1924.

He started the 1924-25 season as the preferred outside-right and was virtually ever-present until November 1924 when William Wainwright was signed and Frank found himself replaced again.

By trade Frank was a silk weaver in Leek, but by 1932 it would appear that he had moved to Blackpool where he ran his own business.

FL       League 129(22)19    Cups 19(2)3

Debut 9 August 1997 Torquay United (Home)

Steve was a firm favourite of the supporters both on and off the pitch and whilst he was often referred to as “the joker in the pack” there was certainly a lot more to “Woody” than the description implies. Steve played all his football locally at Chadderton, Mossley, Droylsden, Stalybridge and Ashton before Sammy McIlroy brought him to the Moss Rose at the beginning of the 1993-94 season, making his debut in the 1–5 defeat at Bath, Sammy McIlroy’s first match in charge. Steve became an important part of the Silkmen’s Conference side as an attacking midfielder and regularly appeared on the score sheet. In the summer of 1995 he suffered broken foot bones when a JCB turned over on him at work leaving him out of contention until February 1996.

Successes along the way in his Conference days included a FA Trophy winners’ medal in 1996, a member of the Conference championship sides in 1995 and 1997, Conference League Cup winners’ medal in 1994 as well as a winners’ medals in the Staffordshire Senior Cup in 1997. In the 1996-97 season he was top scorer with 18 goals and was voted Player of the Year. Steve scored many important goals, but his brace in the 3-2 win at Stevenage in March 1996 set the Silkmen well on their way to the Conference Championship and promotion to the Football league.

Steve made the transition to the Football League at the age of 34 where he fearlessly dominated the midfield. But in the 1997-98 season he fractured a cheekbone which required an operation to relieve a trapped nerve returning after only three matches. In December he fractured the other cheekbone, this time returning after only one match wearing a ‘Zorro’ style face mask for protection. He did not allow these injuries to affect his performance completing the season as the side’s highest scorer with 13 goals and was voted Player of the Year for a second successive season.  .

He was a member of the team which finished runners-up in the Nationwide League Division 3, the Silkmen's first year as a Football League team. Following the team’s promotion to the Nationwide League Division 2, Steve scored in the win against Stoke City in the first round of the Worthington Cup in August, but life in the league was much more difficult. The Silkmen’s first League goal of the season only coming in September at Wrexham  which was scored by Steve who only days later scored the winning goal, a 66th minute penalty, at Oldham Athletic to give the Silkmen their first win in the higher division. Gained a winners' medal in the Cheshire Senior Cup in 1998. In the following season Steve had to spend some time on the bench after younger midfielders regained fitness but when introduced he still proved that he had the necessary stamina and always tried to turn the game and lift spirits.  In January of the 1999-2000 season he stepped up to become joint coach with John Askey after the appointment of Peter Davenport as manager. Steve continued to feature in the starting line-up at the start of the 2000-01 season until the partnership of Chris Priest and Kevin Keen was formed after which he rarely featured in the senior side, although he captained the reserves.

Steve’s association with the Silkmen ended in the summer of 2001 when he moved to Stalybridge Celtic for whom he made 38 league appearances.

Since Steve retired from football he has worked in the construction industry and for three years coached the junior team at Compton Villa.

Born: Oldham, 23 June 1963.

With apparently no opportunities available for him in the senior side, his contract was cancelled by mutual agreement in March 2003 after which he signed semi-professional forms for Congleton Town but only stayed with them briefly, retiring in his late 20s.

An article in the 21 June 2023 edition of the Macclesfield Express newspaper gave Dave an opportunity to explain the medical problems he encountered whilst playing for Macclesfield and Congleton which were not in the Public Domain at the time. He suffered from pain for a number of years until at the age of 37 he was diagnosed at Haywood Hospital with ankylosing spondylitis, a form of hereditary arthritis which affects the spine and joints, which followed a flare up of the condition that left his joints and bones inflamed, hands and feet swollen, coupled with excruciating pain all of which is now managed with medication.

Works as a commercial broker and counts playing the guitar and singing as his hobbies.

Wragg Peter

1985-86 to 1992-93 Manager

Wragg_Peter

In the 1970's Peter was a player with Cheshire League side Leek Town where he won a championship medal.  Unfortunately a broken leg curtailed any further success as a player and he became manager at Leek for two seasons guiding them to a fourth and second finish in the league table. He then  managed Cheshire League sides Stalybridge Celtic (joining them in August 1977 managing 365 games in three spells including playing in seven games) and Chorley before joining Hyde United in 1983 where his greatest achievement was taking the side to the first round proper of the FA Cup for the first time in 20 years.

Peter was appointed manager at Macclesfield Town in March 1986 and so started one of the most successful times in the history of the club. In his first full season in charge, 1986-87, an unprecedented Northern Premier League treble was achieved (League Championship, League Cup and Presidents Cup) leading to promotion to the G.M. Vauxhall Conference. He was Manager of the Month in both March and April 1987 and manager of the Year for 1986-87.

In their first season in the Conference the team finished 11th and progressed to the third round of the FA Cup losing 0-1 to Port Vale and to the final of the Cheshire Senior Cup.

The 1988-89 season saw further success for Peter, the side leading the Conference on two occasions, eventually finishing in seventh position and progressed to the final of the Cheshire Senior Cup in successive seasons. However, the summit of the season was their appearance in the final of the FA Trophy at Wembley which resulted in disappointment when they lost 0-1 to Telford United in extra time.

In 1989-90 there was a fourth place finish in the Conference, another appearance in the first round of the FA Cup with the team going out to Chester in a replay, and losing finalists in both the Staffordshire and Cheshire Senior Cups.

The following season Peter's team eventually won the Cheshire Senior Cup in their fourth successive final appearance  defeating Witton Albion 2-0 and finished seventh in the Conference. During the 1991-92 season the team reached the semi-final of the FA Trophy losing to the eventual winners Colchester United and another Cheshire Senior Cup final.

In his final season at Macclesfield, 1992-93, Peter led his team to the first round of the FA Cup against league side Chesterfield progressing after a replay at Chesterfield, Macclesfield winning 3-2 on penalties before losing to Stockport County in the second round. The semi-final of the Drinkwise Cup (League Cup) was reached but the Silkmen were struggling in the league. Before the final match of the season Macclesfield were one of the favourites to be relegated but thanks to Altrincham winning 5-2 at Farnborough and Macclesfield winning 1-0 at champions Wycombe Wanderers, the Silkmen retained their Conference status completing the season in 18th position. The lowly league position and the narrow escape were too much to the Board of Directors and Peter Wragg left the Moss Rose.

On leaving the Moss Rose Peter spent from June 1993 to March 1994 as manager at Halifax Town. Returned to management when he was appointed manager at Stalybridge in January 2013 having previously assisted Steve Burr at Hucknall Town and Northwich Victoria. However, no longer holds a managerial position but is an ambassador at Macclesfield Town Football Club.

On leaving Halifax he signed for Buxton for the 1947-48 season. Fined 30 shillings and 5 shillings costs for non-payment of a railway fare of 8 shillings and 7 pence from Macclesfield to Halifax on 23 August 1947 following the opening match of the season.  Wrigglesworth stated that when he arrived at Macclesfield station the ticket office was closed and the guard on the train said he could not be bothered with tickets but on arrival at Halifax station he told the ticket collector that he wanted to pay the fare from Huddersfield but it was subsequently established that he had boarded the train at Macclesfield, his excuse being that he wanted to cut down on his expenses.

Signed for Macclesfield Town in the summer of 1948 going straight into the senior side.  Although he appeared in only two-thirds of the matches, nevertheless, he made a significant contribution scoring a goal in every other match.  Scored on his debut in the 1-0 home win, a hat-trick in the 6-3 home win against Shell-Mex in the FA Cup competition and the equalising goal on four occasions.

He then made the move to Norway in search of first team football, playing for Viking from March 2001 (48 appearances, seven goals) where he scored a 90th minute goal against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the UEFA Cup first round first leg, IK Start from January 2003 (68 appearances, 29 goals) where he was the club's leading scorer when they won the First Division and promotion to the Tippeligaen in 2004, but having broken a leg in September 2005 missed most of the 2005 and 2006 seasons. Having recovered spent time on loan to Moss FK from August to December 2006 (11 appearances, two goals). The summer of 2007 saw Ben returning to the UK when he signed for Lincoln City (57 appearances, 17 goals) although in the 2008-09 season his chances were limited through injury.

Signed for Macclesfield Town in the summer of 2009. Often thought of as a target man, he could hold the ball up well especially when acting as a sole striker, but it was a frustrating season for Ben who only scored two goals in December and four in March. A groin strain towards the end of season kept him out of contention for the final matches.

Having been released by Macclesfield in July 2010 he was then a free agent until signing for New Zealand side Richmond Athletics in January 2011 (16 appearances, 26 goals), moving to Nelson Suburbs in January 2012 as player/coach. Stepped down from his role as player/coach in their close season, however continues to be involved in some coaching capacity with the main team, and still features as a player at amateur level as late as May 2020. Signed for Tasman United (based in Nelson, New Zealand) in January 2018, retiring from playing in July 2018 when he became Youth team manager until June 2020, probably when the club ceased to exist having only been formed in 2015.

Said to have played for Macclesfield until he moved to the United States of America, although there is no evidence from information available to this effect but it has to be recorded that a significant amount of match information is unavailable. In America he formed Paterson FC in New Jersey and was their captain, remaining at the club until 1874.  Paterson FC are held as the first club in the USA to have played according to the Football Association rules established in London in 1863 and would appear to have been known as the 'True Blues'.

The town of Paterson was important for the production of silk and quickly drew attention from abroad, especially from Macclesfield.  The town was known as 'Silk City' with English-born silk-industry owners predominat in Paterson between 1850 and 1890, including John Ryle known as the father of the American silk trade who erected the first silk mill there with many ex-Macclesfield silk industry workers emigrating there due to poor conditions at home.

On his return to England he served Macclesfield well for three seasons and then became a member of Macclesfield FC committee and a representative on the Cheshire County Association, having been an inaugural member of the Association in 1878,  where he was held in high esteem. He was made a Life Member of the Cheshire Football Association in 1928. He also became a referee.

In June 1914 was presented with a long service gold medal by the Cheshire Football Association for services to football. At the presentation it was recorded that he was a member of the Macclesfield Football Club Committee for 18 years, a member of the Macclesfield District Association for 25 years, served for five years on the Executive Commiittee of the former Football Combination, served six years on the League line and 11 years as a referee for the Football Association of his county and district
